Skoolie Swarm

About Skoolie Swarm

When Travis and Michelle bought their first bus in 2016 they had no idea that buslife was even a thing. After taking their first big trip in 2017 from Florida to California in a short 26 days, they were hooked on this way of traveling. In 2017 Travis was on the forum to get ideas and info on building the bus. Several people were going to be in Florida for the winter and were talking about getting together in a parking lot somewhere. So, Travis and Michelle started looking for a campground to make a weekend out of the gathering. Ed Bull, who was on the forum, suggested we gather at Sertoma Youth Ranch in Brooksville, Florida. Michelle contacted the campground and was told that she would need to keep track of who was coming because it was run by volunteers. There were 22 rigs at that very first Skoolie Swarm®. Connections were made and everyone had such a great time they knew they had to do it again the next year.

Skoolie Swarm® was founded by Travis and Michelle Mattson and has grown exponentially since its first Swarm in 2018. A Swarm is a gathering of nomads and travelers in skoolies, box trucks, vans, RVs, campers, cars, tents or even hammocks! Basically, if you are breathing, you belong. What started as a small gathering of buses who were already in the area for the winter has grown to an event where people come from the North, South, East and West to attend. Several buses come from Canada each year and there has even been an attendee who came over from Germany a few times. At the Skoolie Swarm in Feb 2023, there were over 430 adults, 210 kids and 270 rigs in attendance. If big events aren’t your thing, try one of our seasonal events which are typically smaller gatherings.

In the future, we are shooting to host 4 Swarms throughout the year and all across the country so that no matter where you are, you will have the opportunity to attend.
